SYSL Spring League Rules 2008

Fields
  1. All games will be played on the travel fields adjacent to the parking lots.
  2. There will be two fields. Each field will be approximately ½ of the size of a high school soccer field with the normal width of the field serving as the length (approximately 30-40 yards x 50-60 yards). Field will run east to west. Each field will contain a penalty box only. Shooting inside the penalty box is not allowed. (This serves as a measure to protect the goalie). Penalty box will be painted red; all other lines white.
  3. Small goals will be used. Goals will be anchored to the ground for safety purposes.
Team Format
  1. Each team will consist of a maximum of 10 players.
  2. There will be a maximum of 8 teams per division.
  3. First game will start May 1 and the last game will be June 7.
  4. In the event of rain, make-up games will be scheduled provided field conditions allow it.
  5. There will be 3 divisions: U-8, U-10 and U-12. The same age groups as used in the fall league will be used in the spring league. Your age on August 1, 2007 determines your age for Spring season
  6. The Executive Committee of SYSL and the Spring League Committee reserves the right to adjust age-groups to accommodate number of players or if deemed in the best interest of the league. An example :U9 instead of U8);
  7. Each team is allowed two adult coaches on the sideline for any game.
  8. Teams will be assigned a team color in lieu of a team name.
  9. There are NO sponsorships for the Spring League.
Rosters and Records
  1. Draft will occur in a lottery type system- drawing out of a hat with all girls being placed on teams first, followed by boys. All players must be drafted using this system. This creates a level of parity.
  2. Changes in rosters must have the approval of SYSL.
  3. No player is permitted to play who is not rostered.
  4. In the event that a player is granted permission to play by SYSL after the deadline/draft, they will be assigned to the next available spot on a team as designated by the Spring League Committee.
  5. There will be no scoring data kept and no league standings maintained.
  6. Players who registered and participated in the fall are covered by insurance. Those that did not register in the fall, are required to pay for insurance coverage ($9.00 per player). Note: Registered players in the Fall have already purchased insurance- it is done every August. All players must be covered under the SYSL policy
Player Equipment
  1. All team jerseys must be the same color and will be provided. SYSL logo will appear on t-shirt.
  2. Shin-guards must be worn at all times and must be covered by socks.
  3. Cleats or athletic shoes must be worn. No “toe-cleats” are allowed on shoes.
Game-Time and Scoring
  1. Each half is as follows: U-8 (20 minutes); U10-U12 (25 minutes). 3 minute half-time.
  2. Continuous clock for all age groups. Time is maintained by the referee.
  3. All goals count 1 point.
  4. There are no goalkeepers.
  5. There will be no off-sides.
  6. A player is allowed to score a maximum of three goals per game. No exceptions!
  7. Substitutions are on the fly. They can occur while the game is going on but must be within close proximity to the bench or sidelines.
  8. Too many players on field as determined by referee equals a penalty kick.
  9. Defending team must be 5 yards away on direct or indirect kicks.
  10. Home team kicks off to start the game. Ball must move forward.
  11. Ball out of play is restarted with throwin taken on white line where the ball left the field.
  12. Goal-line: ball out of play is goal kick or corner kick. Can score from player taking the kick.
  13. Misconduct:
  • No slide tackling. Penalty: red card (Yellow Card) for first offense; red card for second offense.
  • Profanity of any kind by parents/players/coaches will not be tolerated. Penalty: yellow or red card depending on severity; penalty kick awarded.
  • Fighting or attempting to start a fight will not be tolerated. Penalty: Immediate red card; removal from complex; penalty kick awarded.
  • Referee abuse or harassment will not be tolerated. Penalty: yellow or red card depending on severity. Penalty kick awarded.
  • All other soccer rules related to play will be enforced.
  • Yellow card results in mandatory two minute penalty for the offender. Team plays man-down for two minutes.
  • Red card results in player being ejected and team playing one man down for five minutes.
Costs
  1. For players who played in the Fall 2007 season, the cost is $25.00.
  2. For players that DID NOT play in Fall 2007 season, the cost is $36.00 per player. The difference of $9 covers the mandatory insurance.
Practices and Game Schedules
  1. Practices will start two weeks prior to the first game. When games start, there will be no practices.
  2. Games schedules will be available at draft.
  3. Games will start in the evenings at 6:00 p.m.. Saturday games will start at 9:00 a.m.
  4. Each team will play a maximum of two games a week.
Referees and Coaches
  1. Referees will be assigned from the pool of available referees that have complete a referee course.
  2. A referee coordinator will assign all referees to games.
